New First Choice Cafe Centre @ Pujut 7, MIri

It's been a while since i have last blog about food, it is really troublesome to travel around in Miri if you do not have a car. Raging and craving for a good meal, the day had finally come. Yet, i'm don't hope to put a high expectation on this.

Most of my friend's exam are over and they had been having a good time enjoying their holiday. Sadly, i was not one of them that gets to enjoy fully but it was a great night as i was invited to join along for dinner where i do not need to see Senadin food for just 1 night. Sin nee drove us all for the dinner=)

They had not decided on what to eat until they suggested to go to the restaurant yiing went last time. We were not sure where it was, just try our luck. We missed one of the turning and had to go all the way to a roundabout and make a U-turn (2 roundabout U-turns to be exact).

When you sit down, you could see most of the tables are order the same claypot dish and the board indicating the same thing. The first thing you enter the restaurant, you could smell a strong aromatic curry smell. I was hoping to we would call that, since everyone is calling it, must be something special, and we did.

三味豆腐 (3 taste tofu), is something i could relate to thai style tofu. I guess the meaning of 3 taste is sweet sour salty, i don't taste any spiciness in it. As i mentioned, i had to lower down all expectation, still i have to criticize. The tofu was fried with a tip of crunchiness but there was too much toppings (onions etc) that spoilt the taste.

Butter Chicken. We call for the small portion but i didn't quite expected it to be that small. This was indeed one of butter chicken i tried with a stronger butter taste,i like the taste but there's a lack of sauce for us to enjoy. The chicken was dry which lower down the point given.

I mentioned that there's the strong aromatic curry smell and a claypot dish where most of the table will have it. I read through food blogs of Miri and found out that this place is famous for its signature dish, curry fish head. Whenever people mentioned about curry fish head, it is this place. The curry fish head was a good choice especially when the weather was very cold (strong wind), it urged me to eat it when the dish is served due to the strong smell! It wasn't very spicy with a thick gravy to fill it on your rice. It could have done better without me eating fish scales in every 2-3 bites of my fish! That is what i dislike the most. Overall, i do recommend this curry fish head.  

We wanted to call clams but some of our friends didn't like it, may be next time.


The restaurant was not visible from the main road. The only landmark is a restaurant name Lou Wai Lou (楼外楼）is facing the main road. That's the area where New First Choice Cafe Centre is located.

Sunrise Seafood Court @ Jalan Boulevard Commercial Centre

I have never been know that behind Boulevard Mall there's so many restaurants and most of them are packed!

We came here because my friends told me that here sells a char kuey teow that is close to Penang's taste. Our group consist a lot of Penangnites and they missed char kuey teow very much!! I missed it very much of course as i'm a fan of CKT.

It does taste better than other char kuey teow i ate in Miri, closest to Penang taste...so far...  But there's one problem, even you ordered for spicy, they'll give u a small plate of chilly instead of frying with the CKT. So called the Penang char kuey teow. There's definitely some 'wok hei' there.

Something i like about this dumpling was the soup as it taste a bit alcoholic. The stuff inside the dumpling was really stingy as i felt like i'm just eating flour. gosh.

Pan Mee was seriously out. The soup was tasteless and this is the worst pan mee i've ever tasted. And the anchovies and others are just for decoration purpose i think.

 The sotong bakar and ikan bakar. We have the final agreement that the sotong bakar was way better than the stingray. I'll still prefer stingray to be cooked in Portuguese style. The chilly paste, personally i think its not spicy enough but it taste good. 

Zha Jiang Mian. Basically minced meat noodle with some cucumber, carrot and some meatballs. Another tasteless one even with the minced meat. I have to ask for vinegar and soya sauce to enhance the taste. Same stall as the pan mee, i think they're good for tasteless food. Healthy food

Oyster Omelet (Oh Jian) is very different from Penang or even Melaka style. It is a thin piece of omelet and some small little oysters inside. And instead of sweet chilly sauce, the sauce they gave is something really salty and it goes pretty well with the omelet.

Have our final meal at Dessert Master just opposite of Sunrise Seafood Court.

Desserts are pretty much the same, since i'm not really a dessert fan, i am unable to differentiate the good and bad ones.

Madam Wee @ Jalan Muraya, Krokop, Miri

Today my mom is leaving Miri, back to west malaysia. I insisted that she must eat the sarawak laksa before she leaves. How come you come Sarawak and not eating the 2 common local food (laksa and kolo mee) that everyone is telling us? Reach the restaurant around 8.30a.m and WOW, was it packed with people. We sat with a friendly lady and she recommended sarawak laksa and homemade noodle.

 Homemade noodle. Personally, i didn't like this because the noodle was lack of sauce, so it was a bit dry for me. Taste wise was okay as they added pork lard and some minced meat. Char siew was again... missing KL's one.

Next, Sarawak laksa, the 2nd one i tried and this was better than the one in Jing Wood Cafe.  Given generous amount of ingredients and there's an 'ohm' in the soup (strong taste). I would prefer to add the lime to enhance the taste. Recommended.

It is advisable to go early as it will be packed with people!

Campus Tour

We heard that there's a Giant Hypermarket at Permyjaya, not supermarket in Bintang Mall. Great place to shop for necessities but if i were to go Giant from my campus, i will need a car =( Items at grocery shop opposite Curtin Villa was crazily expensive. After having trouble finding Permyjaya in the GPS, we asked the hotel reception roughly where was the place and there we go! Fortunately, we were able to find it through sign boards. (We couldn't find it in GPS because we typed Permi jaya.

 Giant giant.. Bought some of the food items, basket, dustbin and etc. Saw this yellow little stuff, being a KL city boy that loves walking around supermarket looking mostly at food item. I had never seen this little yellow brinjal before.

 Took our lunch at Sugarbun, something we do not have in West Malaysia. I'm surprised that a fast food chain store sells Asian Cuisines + fast foods. It just doesn't match!

Beef cheese burger was what i ordered, and my comment? Even KL street burger (ramly) taste better than this, huge difference. When i got the burger, i did not have the appetite to eat due to the poor food presentation. I have not tried the Asian Cuisines yet, but beef burger is big nono.

 My mom was attracted by the environment at Curtin, so we went back there again. It was drizzling when we left hotel but it stopped later on. Thank god the weather was good when we reach Curtin Uni, or else i wouldn't be able to take photos again. Going through the green road again.

 Previous day, Simon toured us around but i still couldn't recognize this building when we came in from the campus roundabout. Then, there was this girl suddenly said hi, she looked familiar and yea, we met at the Curtin briefing at Federal Hotel, KL last month. I couldn't really remember her name at the time and called her michelle pula! alamak!

Recreation Building front view. They have basketball court, 3 badminton court, gym (weight room and cardio). I'll definitely apply for the gym, RM30 per month! Its sad that i couldn't bring along my badminton racquet, the court is only rm3, sweat.

School of Business (SOB), where most of my lectures will be held here. I can't compare the seat of the lecture hall compared to overprice Taylor's Uni (comfy sofa that makes u sleep easily).

On my way to the cafeteria, hope the food there will be alright. I'm just concerned about food, haha!

School of Engineering (Skylark).

Its unique that they uses different kinds of birds, Heron (school of business), Skylark (school of engineering) and etc. I will be lost for a while i guess.

Was a great day to take pictures! There's place to sit and relax (beside lake), but there were mud everywhere! I hope the management is able to do something about this, terrible!

Saw this cute little radar thing, i think solar power equipment used by the engineering students.

Water clog were everywhere, algae growing around the walking path, this is unacceptable!! How can i find crocodile when there's these things blocking my path =S... Apparently, there's crocodile here O_O, i'm surprised to here that. Anyone care for some croc meat ?

Lakeside Apartment. RM500 per month. With a black lake in front of them, yes, you did not see it wrongly, BLACK! Even the drain water linked to this lake is black.

Whole lot is Prinia (Another bird), where student services/finance department/housing department are here... also tutorial class, if not mistaken.

2nd Night at Miri. A hectic day we got, GPS doesn't work, getting lost at some point where GPS brought us to 'Holland'. Thanks to the weather, it wasn't that bad actually. Another Cari Makan time, night time! I think its kinda tough to find local kopitiam foods during night time. At first, we wanted to go to a famous chicken porridge but after driving 3 rounds at that place, we gave up, couldn't find where was it. We saw Soon Joo Cafe was open and decide 'let's just go eat there and complete our dinner'.

Since its a kopitiam and food is nowhere to be found nearby, we chose this. Super friendly aunty, chatting with us since there were not many customers at that hour. My mom even bought the raw Kolo Mee and bring back to KL, haha.

Kolo Mee again but i can assure you, this was way better than the one at 5050 Cafe. The noodles were tangy and char siew is even better but i don't think it can replace the ones in KL. It's different type of style, so no complains.

The Pork Liver Soup has a touch of alcohol as they added Shaoxin wine to enhance the taste and also remove the strong smell of the pork liver? Tell me if i'm wrong. There are generous portion of pork liver inside and totally worth the money.

 

Mee Pok was not as good as i expected, even lower. The noodle was really plain & tasteless, just added some spring onion, char siew and fried onions. I ordered this because my Kuching friend told me Mee Pok was good in Sarawak, well maybe this shop is not good for its Mee Pok. No recommended at all.
